The stumps flew wide and Perry gazed at her in mock awe. Then he looked at his brother.

“This girl has hidden talents,” he announced. “I’m not surprised you chose her for your team.”

Prudence flushed as he and Sebastian began to clap.

“I expect it was a fluke,” she said shyly. “Now it’s Perry’s turn. Will you bowl to him, my lord?”

“No, Prudence! The bowler must finish the over.” Sebastian’s eyes were twinkling.

Prudence tried again, but Perry was on his mettle. He hit the next five balls almost into the surf.

“I can’t beat him, sir, but if you tempt him into a rash stroke I might catch him.” Prudence threw the ball to her partner.

“No chance of that!” Perry announced, but success had made him over-confident. He struck the next ball high into the air and Prudence raced across the beach. She was running backwards as she caught it. Then the heel of her boot became entangled in her skirt. She tripped and fell headlong.

With a sharp exclamation Perry threw aside his bat, but Sebastian was the first to reach her. He fell to his knees in the sand, and raised her tenderly in his arms. “Are you hurt, my dear?”

Something in his tone caused Perry to glance at his brother’s face. Then he looked away. That glimpse of raw emotion had told him more than any words could say. Sebastian was in love with Prudence, even though he might not’ be aware of it.

“Just winded, sir, but I caught Perry out.” Prudence brandished the ball. “I should have worn my breeches, but I did not know that we were to play cricket…”
